What is Holistic Intuitive Counselling?................

Buzz words abound in any field of expertise and counselling has its fair share including gestalt, cognitive behavioral, guided imagery, humanistic, psycho dynamic etc. But hardly anyone who wants to see a counsellor understands what these mean. There are many articles explaining the theory and practice behind them but these often include even more buzz words. This article explains what holistic intuitive counselling is, using simple language and terminology.

The online Cambridge Dictionary 1 gives the meaning of holistic as "dealing with or treating the whole of something or someone and not just a part", and the meaning of intuition as "able to know or understand something because of feelings rather than facts or proof." Counselling is defined by that source as "the job or process of listening to someone and giving them advice about their problems".

When combined this gives a definition of Holistic Intuitive Counselling as something like: "Listening to someone and giving them advice by using the ability to know or understand their problems due to feelings rather than facts, and treating the whole of the person." This is a fair definition excepting for the "feelings rather than facts" bit, which in this combined definition make it sound as if the counsellor is disregarding the facts in favour of her own feelings about the problem. This is not the case with this type of counselling. Facts are very much taken into account as the reference point for the counsellor's intuitive deductions.

This is because "intuition" is so much more than understanding something because of feelings. It is the process of finding a solution in the realm of the super-conscious in response to the facts known at the conscious level. This process is available to everyone; many people have, after a frustrating period of thinking about a problem, gone to bed and woken up the next morning with the proverbial "flash of inspiration" solution. What has happened here is that the conscious mind has stopped thinking about the problem, and the perfect answer has been accessed from the super-conscious. So what is the super-conscious and how does this process work?

We have three levels of "mind", 2 the conscious, which sees life as it appears to be (in other words, our normal daily life), the sub-conscious, the programmable mind, that part of us which takes on ANY beliefs, ideas and instructions, and acts upon them, and the super-conscious, the expanded awareness, the realm of all knowledge.

You could imagine this graphically in this simplistic example, as the sub-conscious "worker" awaiting instruction, the conscious "supervisor" giving instructions (e.g. Don't climb that tree to fetch the kitten, you may fall - this learned through being told and perhaps also bitter experience) and the super-conscious "manager" bypassing the conscious and giving the sub-conscious mind the best solution (fetch the neighbour's ladder and you will be able to reach high enough to get the kitten).

Imagine the "manager - super-conscious mind" as only being able to give instruction to the "worker - sub-conscious mind" when the "supervisor - conscious mind" has "given up", and has stopped blocking the channel with his worrying about the problem. This is why meditation achieves excellent results, because the conscious mind is quietened allowing the super-conscious mind to give perfect instructions to the sub-conscious.

So, therefore, intuitive counselling is the process whereby the counsellor, in possession of the facts, clears their own conscious mind's thoughts and conclusions about the client's problems, allowing the super-conscious mind which is shared, incidentally, by all of creation, to give an instant and perfect solution. Some may call this receiving an answer from God.

Now, holistic treatment is an added dimension to this process. Treating the whole person is finding its way into many different therapies, but what exactly does it mean? We are all part of a universe made entirely of energy. (Remember Albert Einstein and E=mc2 - and now Quantum Physics 3?). Our physical bodies are therefore only energy, and they are solid because this energy is of a very high density.

What about our thoughts and emotions? They exist, certainly, as we all know - they are not imaginary, but we cannot see them or find them anywhere in the physical body. So where and what are they? There are other 'bodies' of energy besides the physical, which vibrate at higher frequencies and are less dense than the physical body. One of these is called the emotional body and another, the mental body. Their low density and high frequency prevents us (who have a high density and low frequency) from being able to touch or see them. All of these bodies are integrated and affect each other constantly in our daily lives in the following manner.

Event ->> thought/belief ->> emotion ->> reaction 4
For example:

  • Event - You are in a plane for the first time and it shudders violently
  • Thought/belief - You have been told by friends that this means it could crash; you believe this so your thought is "We're going to crash!"
  • Emotion - With that thought you immediately feel afraid
  • Reaction - With that emotion you start to panic, tremble and hyperventilate.

    But if your first thought had been "Oh this is fun, like a rollercoaster" then the resulting emotion and reaction would be quite different. Thus it can be seen that thoughts and emotions are assimilated and stored ready for re-use; that they affect each other and the physical body; they always precede what we do about something, and they are triggered by similar events to the very first one that caused the physical reaction in question. For example, even seeing a picture of a plane could trigger trembling and panic.

    Therefore it is necessary to treat the original thoughts and emotions tied to an event, as well as the physical symptoms, in order to prevent relapses and effect a deep healing.

    So intuitive holistic counselling is:- "Listening to someone carefully to gain all the relevant facts, and then accessing the super-conscious (of both the counsellor and client) to gain the best solution for the problem at hand, and using this intuitive knowledge to treat the body, mind and emotions of the client in order to give relief and prevent the problem from recurring."
