Ego - what is it?................

Ego is the self as defined by the interaction of the world with one’s existence. In other words it is the personality, an entity which has developed from nothing since birth, and has been formed by others’ opinions and teachings. It is a mirror of these teachings and opinions, a mirror of the society one exists within. It reflects these teachings and opinions in the form of set actions and reactions – habits. It is a cumulative phenomenon and is not the real self.

Yet it feels like the self as it is the only point of reference one has within conscious existence, much as one’s home is a major point of reference in the world. The ego, like the home, feels like a safe refuge, even though it had to be built from nothing, and can be broken down.

The ego is a cloak that our soul wears; clothing that defines our place within society. The ego thrives on, needs, constant feedback from society. Without that it is lost, as without something to reflect, the mirror is blank. Therefore the ego constantly looks to the outside for answers.

However, the ego is necessary in the evolution of the soul. If one were to grow up outside of society and alone, ego would not develop and the person would be like an animal, with no sense of self. He would then have no conscious reference point from which to begin the spiritual journey, so would never discover the nature of the true self.

An entity has to have an ego in order to understand that the entity is an entity, seemingly separate from other entities. This gives beings a basis for questioning the purpose of being. When the person understands, through questioning, that this ego is a false identity, that this is not the real self, then he can progress spiritually.
